Default ascalon/knight armor question

I know that the "reduces damage from attacks" is -2 damage, just like a major absorption rune, but how is it added onto your armor?

Is the damage reduction only for that piece of armor being hit? (e.g. you have knight's gauntlets, and you get hit on the arm, and you would have taken 10 damage, but instead take 10-2= 8 damage. You get hit again on the legs, and take the full 10 damage.)

I've also heard that the damage reduction applies for all armor, regardless of which one has the damage reduction, but doesn't stack. (e.g. you have only the knight's leggings, and get hit on the arm, and you would have taken 10 damage, and take 8 damage anyways, because the single piece of knight's armor affects all body parts)
